  • Analysis and interpretation of the form and meaning of works of art
  • Recognition and use of discipline-based vocabularies
  • The importance of context (aesthetic, historical, cultural, site)
  • Different written genres used by art professionals, such as announcements of exhibitions to the general public, reviews in magazines and professional journals, and descriptions of curated exhibitions and/or specific artworks
  • Speaking about works of art thoughtfully and critically
  • Writing about works of art both creatively and analytically.

This course is designed to engage you in a rigorous course of study that imparts new skills and knowledge or augments prior experience. The outcomes above can only be met through your commitment and diligence; if you put in the time and energy, the outcomes described here can have a lasting positive impact on your performance in any course you take going forward by improving your ability to critically analyze or appraise objects, experiences, texts or oral arguments.  In addition, learning about and practicing different genres of writing about art will improve your ability to adapt to different forms of writing in general.
