This course offers students a chance to experience art in spaces specifically designed to house art — the museum and the gallery. Each week, students will travel off campus to see exhibitions at different venues in San Francisco. Through this exposure to both art, galleries and museums students are asked to examine the various written forms of address that galleries and museums use in their promotion of exhibitions, and in the deeper consideration of art and its meanings. Students will write about art using art world genres such as the announcement and the exhibition review as well as engaging with the work through a creative writing project and a critical essay.
